Sports

In Scoil Inse Rátha we acknowledge that school life should focus on more than just academic subjects. We pride ourselves on being an active school and we encourage pupils to become involved in a wide variety of sporting activities.

GAA

We are delighted to have Niall McIntyre, a qualified GAA coach from Erin’s Own Coaching scheme, involved in training our first to sixth class students. Niall works with the students every Friday, taking them through skills development, drills and coaching in both hurling and football. Niall also organises blitzes involving other local schools where the students can put their teamwork and sports skills to the test.

Scoil Inse Rátha has a long tradition of taking part in Sciath na Scol – a competition held annually between primary schools in Cork City and County. Football leagues are played in autumn and the hurling leagues begin at Easter. Indoor hurling and camogie competitions for third and fourth classes are played during the winter months, with particular emphasis on participation and enjoyment, giving children a chance to sample Sciath na Scol action for the first time.

Soccer

Each year the boys and girls from fourth to sixth classes participate in the highly competitive FAI 5-a-side soccer competition. This competition has been running for over twenty years and Scoil Inse Rátha has a long association with it. The event is run initially as a one day blitz with successful teams going forward to finals in Turner’s Cross Stadium. The competition runs in March and generates great excitement in the school.

Swimming

Children from the fourth to sixth class participate in a six week swimming programme (as part of their PE curriculum) each year. This generally occurs in January and February. The swimming lessons are run by qualified swimming instructors at the swimming facilities in Mayfield.

Basketball

We are delighted to have Mark Scannell (Head Coach of the Irish Senior Women’s basketball team) coaching students in our school each year. Every class from Junior Infants to Sixth class participates in a very enjoyable five week programme which teaches the fundamental skills of basketball in a very active and enjoyable way.

Athletics

Cork Primary School Sports is an athletics event held every year in June in Páirc Uí Chaoimh (CIT during refurbishment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh). Up to 7000 boys and girls from all around the county compete in sprints and relays. It is the largest one-day athletics competition in Europe. Scoil Inse Rátha has a great tradition of participation and success in this event.
