Music, Art and Drama

At Scoil Inse Rátha, we promote a high level of student involvement in music, art and drama activities.

Music

Cór Fhéile na Scol

Every year our school takes part in Cór Fhéile na Scol in the Cork City Hall. It is a non-competitive festival of music, song and dance for the primary school children of Cork city and county. The concerts are held over a two week period in the Spring. This year Junior and Senior Infants will perform on the 19th April 2016. It is a wonderful event, which can be enjoyed by all the family.

School Choir and Fundraising for Charity

At Christmas time the school choir joins together to sing Christmas Carols to celebrate the festive season.  The school choir use this opportunity to raise money for others. Last Christmas the children raised approximately €260 for the well deserved charity ‘Make A Wish Foundation’.

Art

Art and Craft Club is offered from Junior Infants – 2nd Class as an extra-curricular activity. The aim of the club is to allow the children to experience and enjoy all aspects of art and design. Children are encouraged to express themselves and to be creative in a relaxed environment.

Drama

Drama Club

Speech & Drama classes are offered as an extra-curricular activity.  We run two Drama Clubs:

Junior Drama (Senior Infants – 2nd classes)

Senior Drama (3rd-6th classes)

Classes are full of fun, activity and lots of opportunities to explore different areas of drama – from mime and improvisation to poetry and stage production.  Each child is given the opportunity to develop confidence, think creatively and learn to work with others. We take part in a Feis at Christmastime and the highlight of our year is our on-stage productions which we run in CIT at Eastertime as a fundraiser for various charities.

Musicals

We have a tradition in our school whereby every two years, we stage a whole-school production.  It is the one event in our school calendar where every child in the school has an active part and it is always a HUGE success.  As well as it being an entertaining showcase for the audience, participation in the musical enables the students to develop important life-skills such as presentation, working together and confidence.

Previous titles include:

  • Cinderella Spinderella (2012)
  • The Wizard of Oz (2009)
  • ·Oliver (2007)

This year, our musical was entitled ‘A Story Before Bed’ and was staged in the Radisson Blu in Little Island.  As the name suggests, our play was based around eight well-loved children’s tales being read by a grandmother to her four grandchildren.  Each class was given a different story which included Goldilocks, The Enormous Crocodile, The Three Little Pigs, The twits, Cinderella, The TRUE Story of the Three Little Pigs, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Witches.  Our concert was an enormous success and the children brought the house down on each night.  Each class group worked so hard to learn their lines, practice their performance and acting skills and sing their songs.  We are so proud of each and every student here in our school, and if you missed the show, have a look at some of the pictures below.
